BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Ondo State School of Midwifery was established in January 1978 under the administration of the Military Government Col. Ita David Ikpeme.

The first Principal of the School was Mrs. F.B.O. Onifade.

The School started with the first set of post basic student midwives (22 in number) in March 1978 and the first set of Basic Student Midwives in September 1978 with the academic staff strength of three (3) midwife tutors and two (2) clinical instructors. The School then was located at the Ministry of Health compound, Oke-Eda, Akure.

The School continued running the two training programmes (i.e. Post Basic and Basic Midwifery Programme) until 1987 when the Basic Midwifery training was stopped and it continued only the post basic training.

The School moved to its permanent site (i.e. present location) in 1985. In 1986, the State Government merged the schools of Nursing and Midwifery into what was then known as School of Nursing and Midwifery, Akure. The Schools were under the umbrella of one Principal between 1987 and 1995. However, the two programmes were separated in October 1995 to enhance better performance.

In 2003, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, in her effort to meet the dire need for skilled and competent community oriented midwives to facilitate a reduction in the escalating maternal and infant mortality, particularly in the communities, re-introduced the Basic Midwifery Programme and each State was requested to indicate her interest in the programme.

The Ondo State Government responded favourably to the request and the school started the programme again in April, 2003 and continued running the two training programmes parri-passu until January 2006 when the post basic training programme was stopped. Presently, the school runs only the Basic Midwifery training programme. The Principal is Mrs. B.O. Oladele.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide student midwives with the best learning experience that equip them for proficient midwifery practice that facilitate safer maternal and child health care in the communities

PHILOSOPHY OF THE SCHOOL

The School believes that:

  1. The concept of medical, physical, biological and social sciences should be the basis of midwifery education and that it should be adopted throughout the course. Since the family is the basic unit of human existence, midwifery practice therefore must be family-centered in the course of planning care for the expectant family
  2. Midwifery is a profession, an art and a science through which improvement of human welfare is employed through cooperation with other health and social disciplines. This is aimed at giving holistic care to the women in pregnancy, labour, puerperium and throughout her reproductive years.
  3. 3. Taking cognizance of the World Health Organization (W.H.O) concept in reducing maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, health care should be integrated into the community, using the family unit in such a way that through health education, family members would be able to take part in planning and implementing health care for their family as well as their community
